What a day! Checked in at 7am, got IV and pitocin going around 8:30am after 5 attempts and 3 nurses. By 4-5pm the contractions had been very painful for a few hours but very little progress had been made (still just 2 cms) and therefore little end in sight. Ashley called for an epidural which took 3 attempts before it actually worked right. Then after getting comfortable for about an hour, Jack started to show signs of distress with the contractions. The pitocin was stopped to relax the contractions but Ashley’s body kept contracting on her own. Jack’s heart rate was fluctuating around 100 when it had been between 140-175 previously. Just a few minutes later Ashley had a c-section and we heard and saw Jack for the first time! He had such a funny cry, like a little monkey, and mom finally had some relief…For the next few hours everyone was doing fine. Then around 2am Ashley was still bleeding a lot which required a lot of “mashing” on her stomach to expel residual blood, which was extremely painful, and eventually caused Ashley to go into a panic attack. Meanwhile, Jack’s blood glucose levels started dropping slowly so he has been stuck in the nursery behind the glass.
Now a full 24 hours since the start, we have Jack with us in our room, glucose levels good, and mom is starting to feel better. Oh yea, and Dad is doing great!
